How a Sunspot Became My Daily Reminder of Love-Heart Shaped Grace

Yes, that is a heart on my face! People, especially children ask all of the time, "Is that a heart on your face?" This is the story of how a stubborn sunspot turned into a daily reminder of God's amazing love and grace!

I have practiced good skin care including daily use of sunscreen for many years in the past few decades. However, there was a time that I slathered down in baby oil with no sunscreen and baked in the sun for hours to get the deep dark tan that every young woman in the south seeks to have! Later in life, I am seeing the results of all of that unprotected sunbathing. Never, did I think I would be so grateful for the Sunspot that God gave me later in life, a reminder of his love.

From sunbathing on a regular basis with no sunscreen in my teens and twenties, to just beginning to using sunscreen while sunbathing in my thirties, I never thought about getting the hideous sunspots that show up later in life and like all young women, I thought it just would not happen to me.

In my forties, after my children were grown, I had the opportunity to take my career as a speech language pathologist on the road to Florida. It was an awesome experience to enjoy life with different cultures in Naples, Fl and Key West, Fl. I lived and worked with people from all over the world and it was an experience that I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do. I was baptized in the Gulf of Mexico in Naples, Fl. I embraced working with different cultures and worked with so many different speech and language disorders. It was a time of considerable growth in my career and personal life. However, the sun was a scorcher and my first Sunspot showed up on my face!

With my first Sunspot on my cheek, I did what most women do in their forties, I headed to the specialists to have it removed. They said the technique of Dermabrasion, a technique that uses a motorized device to scrape away the top layer of skin, would be this most effective treatment, so I endured the painful procedure. Yes, it disappeared; I had a red spot for a while. However, within a few weeks, the sunspot was back and it brought a friend with it. Now, I had two sunspots! Oh my! I headed back to the specialists and had the Dermabrasion procedure performed again. More pain, but the spots were gone! I was relieved until, just like the previous time, the two spots returned ....with another friend, a third sunspot!

This is when I I received God's message: these are the reminders of the most amazing gifts I gave you..your three children (boys): Rick, Randy, & Ryan. I embraced my three sunspots and named them Rick, Randy, and Ryan. Everyday, when I awoke, looked in the mirror and started my make-up routine, I talked to them and thanked God for his blessings and for my reminder. I vowed to wear sunscreen daily, but to never have these three little reminders removed from my face.

To my amazement, the three sunspots began changing, growing together. Within 6 months, the three sunspots became the shape of a beautiful heart! That's right, God gave me a heart when I adopted an attitude of gratitude. I am so grateful for my children and for God's special gift of a heart to remind me every single morning the first thing when I look in the mirror of his amazing love and Grace.

2026: God's Mark of Love is a Heart-Shaped Sunspot On My Face

Now close to 20 years later, I still enjoy this beautiful heart on my face every.. single.. time I look in the mirror. I am careful to not disturb it anytime I engage in facials or applying special skin creams and lotions. I am blessed that it remains a gorgeous heart today and I am grateful to be living close to my three children, Rick, Randy, Ryan and their beautiful families in Georgia with my wonderful husband, Doug and our little dog, Jack.

Yes, the Lord works in mysterious ways. Believe in God's grace. He will walk with you in the hard times and bless you beyond measure. Have faith in the Lord. Thank you, Jesus!
