Why does our hair become gray, coarse, and brittle as we age? It is because our bodies stop producing melanocytes, the cells that pigment our hair and provide oil to our hair. Discover some daily habits to learn how to achieve shiny, silky hair with proper care and diet over 60.

USE THE RIGHT SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER FOR AGING HAIR Wash your hair less often than you did when you were younger. As we age, we produce less oil in our hair. Thus, decreasing the need to wash our hair everyday. After age 50, most women find washing their hair 2-3 times a week yields healthier hair than more frequent shampoos. Use a shampoo for color-treated hair if you color your hair.

MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR Add a small amount of a good hair serum after washing your hair while it is still wet. It will soak up the oil and help protect it while styling. Add a heat protectant if you blow dry or use styling tools.

BE KIND TO YOUR HAIR Give your hair a break from styling and let it dry naturally on some days. Protect your hair from the sun with a hat.

GET FREQUENT HAIRCUTS Get a haircut every 6 weeks to eliminate split ends and breakage.

EAT A NUTRITIOUS DIET Eat a nutritious diet to boost melanin in your hair such as antioxidant food: berries, nuts, beans, citrus fruit, and leafy greens. In addition, foods consisting of foods high in Omega-3s: salmon, tuna, walnuts, avocados, and eggs are beneficial to healthy hair. Even potatoes help maintain the health of your hair. Because we need so many minerals and vitamins for our hair, it is a good idea to take a multivitamin everyday. I mix Vital Proteins Powder into my coffee every morning to give my hair, skin, and nails an extra treat. Your hair and your body will love you for it!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate with plenty of water, green tea, and coffee all day.

With the proper care and diet, you can love your shiny, silky hair for years to come!
